Manchester University kept my place open for three years but I was enjoying the money and freedom. So I turned it down."
Mrs. Stephen is now in the second year of her Open University course and is finding it hard work. She underestimates her ability. "I'm feeling tired more frequently..I can't do more than an hour' s work at a time. The memory' s shocking. "Because of my life I' ve been self-sufficient. It' s not a very nice characteristic. It means I don' t care enough about people. W: I didn't see it. Was it good?
M: Really it was. It was about stress, the effects of stress on the national health.
W: It was interesting, right?
M: Yes. I think they said that one out of nine women aged 45 to 65 will have a heart attack.
W: I' m surprised at that.
M: I was too. Oh, another thing. They said that women usually don' t get the same level of care as men do, so the heart attack is likely to be more serious.
W: Why is that?
M: Because many members of the medical profession still think of a heart attack as a male problem, so they don' t recognize the symptoms in women patients.
W: Well, it does sound very interesting. I' m going to try to see it before class next time, so I'll be ready for the discussion.

A.It is required by Professor Stephen.
B.It is very interesting.
C.He wants to know about heart attacks.

Some of the stories are inspiring, others sad, but what is interesting in almost all the cases is the way in which the children's early hopes and dreams are shown in their future lives. For example, at seven, Tony is a lively child who says he wants to become a sportsman or a taxi driver. When he grows up, he goes on to do both. How about Nicki? She says," I'd like to find out about the moon." And she goes on to become a space scientist. As a child, soft-spoken Bruce says he wants to help "poor children" and ends up teaching in India.
But if the lives of all the children had followed this pattern the program would be far less interesting than it actually was. It was the children whose childhood did not prepare them for what was to come that made the program so inspiring. Where did their ideas come from about what they wanted to do when they grew up? Are children influenced by what their parents do, by what they see on television, or by what their teachers say? How great is the effect of a single important event? Many film directors, including Stephen Spielberg, say that an early visit to the cinema was the turning point in their byes. Dr. Margaret McAllister, who has done a tot of research in this area, thinks that the major influences are parents, friends, and the wider society.
What does the text mainly discuss?
A.New ways to make a TV program interesting.
B.The importance of television programs to children.
C.Different ways to make childhood dreams come true.
D.The influence of childhood experience on future lives.

Tanning Parlors Take Heat
People who seek a glamorous tan through sun lamps may double their risk of developing Common types of skin cancer, according to a new study that found the risk was highest for those who start at a young age.
The study, appearing in the latest issue of Journal of the US National Cancer Institute, concluded that people who use tanning devices were 1.5 to 2.5 times more likely to have common kinds of skin cancer than were people who did not use the devices. The study confirmed what doctors have long suspected-that sun lamp use increases the risk of basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers, said Margaret R. Karagas, first author of the study.
Either going to the tanning parlor, or getting an infrequent sunburn can seriously damage the skin, said Dr. James Spencer, vice chairman of the department of dermatology at Mount Hospital, but the small day-to-day exposure is worse for the skin in the long run.
Joseph A. Levy, vice president of the International Smart Tan Network, however, said occasional sunburn "is a risk factor in all forms of skin cancer and intermittent sunburn is what the tanning industry is trying to stop. '
In the study, Karagas and her colleagues interviewed 603 basal cell skin cancer patients and 293 with squamous cell skin cancer. They talked to 540 control subjects who did not have either type of skin cancer.
About 1 million Americans are diagnosed annually with skin cancer. Among those skin cancer patients, about 80 percent are with basal cell skin cancer, 16 percent, with squamous cell skin cancer and 4 percent with melanoma-the most serious form. of skin cancers. Back to the interviewed patients, 190 reported that they had used tanning devices at some time. In the control groups, only 75 had used such devices. Karagas said a statistical analysis shows that those who used tanning equipment were 2.5 times more likely to get squamous cell skin cancer than those who had not used the devices. For basal cell cancer, the risk was 1.5 times greater.
The risk was highest for those who first used the tanning devices before the age of 20, said Karagas. For this group, the squamous cell cancer risk was 3.6 times greater than that of the controls while the basal cell cancer risk was 1.3 times greater.
The passage confirms that using tanning equipment is harmful to one's health.
