Beginning in October, more than 13,000 McDonald's restaurants in America will use a new ki
nd of cooking oil. McDonald's aims to make its French fries and other fried foods healthier.

The change will not affect the taste or the number of calories in the food. But by changing the cooking oil, McDonald's says, it hopes to cut by nearly half the amount of trans-fatty acids(轉(zhuǎn)換脂肪酸) in French fries and reduce the amount of saturated fats(飽和脂肪) by 16 percent. Scientists believe that trans-fatty acids and saturated fats raise cholesterol(膽固醇) levels and increase the risk of heart disease.

McDonald's new step is important because McDonald's is an industry leader and other fast-food chains and food processors may follow the lead.

For McDonald's, the action comes at a time when Americans are becoming more and more concerned about; obesity(肥胖) is an increasing pressure on food companies to offer healthy food to consumers.

After three years of study, McDonald's officials say they are switching oil that is lower in saturated fats and trans-fatty acids. McDonald's says the change will not cause higher coats for consumers.

Though there is some change, scientists say that the amount of trans-fat in foods at McDonald's and at other fast-food companies is still important.

The main idea of the text is ______.

A.McDonald's is a pioneer in food products

B.McDonald's is enlarging its restaurants in the world

C.fried foods can't keep up with the development of moden society

D.McDonald's is to use new cooking oil

          第9題

Water problems in the future will become more intense and more complex. Our increasing pop
ulation will tremendously increase urban wastes, primarily sewage. On the other hand, increasing demands for water will decrease substantially the amount of water available for diluting wastes. Rapidly expanding industries which involve more and more complex chemical processes will produce larger volumes of liquid .wastes, and many of these will contain chemicals which are noxious. To feed our rapidly expanding population, agriculture will have to be intensified. This will involve ever-increasing quantities of agricultural chemicals. From this, it is apparent that drastic steps must be taken immediately to develop corrective measures for the pollution problem.

There are two ways by which this pollution problem can be dwindled. The first relates to the treatment of wastes to decrease their pollution hazard. This involves the processing of solid wastes "prior to" disposal and the treatment of liquid wastes, or effluents, tn permit the reuse of the water or minimize pollution upon final disposal.

A second approach is to develop an economic use for all or a part of the wastes. Farm manure is spread in fields as a nutrient or organic supplement. Effluents from sewage disposal plants are used in some areas both for irrigation and for the nutrients contained. Effluents from other processing plants may also be used as a supplemental source of water. Many industries, such as meat and poultry processing plants, are currently converting former waste products into marketable by products. Other industries are exploring potential economic uses for their waste products.

The purpose of this passage is ______.

A.to acquaint the reader with water pollution problems

B.to alert the reader to the dwindling water supply

C.to explain industrial uses of water

D.to demonstrate various measures to solve the pollution problem
